Baby Birthday Party Ideas

Having a birthday party for your baby is a great way to introduce your little one to the world. While admittedly, a baby birthday party is more for the parents than for the kids, there’s no reason for it to be any less enjoyable for you, for the guests and yes, even for the baby. Here are some things that you can do for a wonderful baby birthday party.

Baby Birthday Party Invitations

There are a lot of baby birthday invitations available in birthday shops, but you can always make it more personalized by printing a picture of your baby in front of the invitation. You can even make it look more stylized by printing a cartoon version of your baby, or using the silhouette of your baby’s profile.

Use soft, pastel colors for your invitations. Images of baby items such as feeding bottles, baby bibs and diapers are also great designs for your invitations. You can also use images of characters from children’s stories such as Mother Goose, Winnie the Pooh and even the Cat in the Hat. (More tips on how to make birthday invitations)

When it comes to inviting guests, it’s probably better if you keep the number of guests to a minimum number, including your family and closest friends. A big party with lots of people might confuse and scare your little one, not to mention increase the baby’s separation anxiety. A big party might be a little too overwhelming for such a small child. Keep the party small and intimate, because you’ll have plenty of opportunities to throw a big party when your child is a little older and can appreciate a big party.

Schedule your party around your baby’s nap time or at the time when your baby wakes up from his or her regular nap. You don’t want the birthday baby to be fussy and unhappy during the party.

Darling Party Decorations

Like with the invitations, decorate using pastel colors. While it’s traditional to decorate using pink for girls and blue for boys, you can always use other colors as well. For example, for a baby girl’s birthday party, you can use a combination of soft flower colors like lavender, butter yellow and pink. For a boy’s birthday party, you can use blue, violet and a softer red for your colors. Use your color combination when choosing banners, balloons, tablecloth and streamers.

Put up cutouts or pictures of popular fairytale characters or colorful baby items. You can also make your decorations a little more personalized by framing pictures of your baby from the time when he or she was an infant to his or her current age.

Cover your tables in tablecloths following your chosen color scheme, or you can use the cheerful red-and-white checkered ones that are so popular in parties. For your table centerpieces, you can use “baby flowers” like cheerful daisies, sunflowers, mums and carnations. You can also use small helium balloons tied to baby items like baby toys, miniature cribs or bottles of baby food. If you can’t decide, you can both use flowers and balloons for bright and happy table centerpieces.

Having a theme for a party always makes the party more interesting, but keep in mind that your baby will be too small to appreciate it. However, other kids in attendance will surely love going to a theme party, so you can still opt for one, for the sake of your guests. Some popular and appropriate themes for a baby birthday party are:

  • Fairytale theme
  • Dr. Seuss theme
  • Winnie the Pooh theme
  • Teletubby theme
  • Sesame Street theme
  • Dora the Explorer theme

Having an educational party theme is also great for a baby birthday party, since you’ll be expecting your guests to bring along their kids for the celebration. Don’t forget to baby-proof your area and provide lots of toys for the children’s amusement. Play happy children’s songs or music from popular Disney movies to round up your kid-friendly birthday party.

Games and Activities for Your Baby’s Party

The combination of adults, babies and kids in different ages may seem like a challenge when it comes to games and activities, but there are lots of things you can do that involves everyone. Get everyone up and about with these ideas:

  • Guess the Baby Food. Before the party, assemble an array of different baby foods and flavors. Pureed apple, banana, rice, pears, vegetable and chicken are some of the most popular baby food flavors. Make things a little more challenging by presenting blended flavors, and see if your guests can accurately name what baby food they’re tasting.
  • Catch the Balloon. Ask your guests to form a circle and have them number off. The guest with the highest number will be It. The It will stand in the middle of the circle and will drop a balloon while calling out a number. The person who is assigned that number must catch the balloon before it touches the floor. If the attempt is unsuccessful, the person will become the next It.
  • Balloon Bullets. Divide your guests into teams of five. Each team is assigned a color with corresponding helium balloons. Put a target board on your ceiling, with three concentric circles. The outermost circle will be worth five points, the middle will be worth ten points, while the center circle will be worth 15 points. At the word “go”, each team member will try to release their balloon so that it will land on the center of the circle. The team who gets the most points, wins.
  • Baby Bowling. Fill baby bottles with rice and prop them in a bowling pin formation. Your guest should try to bowl all the baby bottles over using plastic balls or small cloth balls. The team who gets to bowl the most baby bottles, wins.

  • Dedication Book. Your baby is too young to remember this special party, but that doesn’t mean you can’t keep souvenirs! Keep a digital camera at hand and a printer at your disposal. Take pictures of your guests during the party. Print out the pictures and put them in a photo album or a scrapbook. Have your guests sign special messages for your baby in the pages. When your baby is all grown up, he or she will certainly appreciate that special souvenir you made.
  • Celebrity Baby. Print out or cut out pictures of famous babies, or the kids of celebrities. Paste the pictures on a big piece of paper, number them and put the paper with the pictures up on the wall. Hand out cards and have the guests write down their guesses on who the baby is. Collect the cards afterwards to tally each guest’s correct guess. The person with the most correct answers, wins.
  • Pinata. Order a baby-themed pinata, like a rattle-shaped one, and watch the kids go and try to break it open. (If you want to make your own pinata, read how to make a pinata)

You don’t have to go on a stretch thinking of fun activities for the kids. They’re more likely to be as happy playing with the various toys you’ve laid out, or running around with other kids while playing special games. It’s also advisable that you get one of your closest friend or family to help you out when it comes to games, since kids can be rowdy and you’ll also be taking care of the birthday baby, too.

Yummy Baby Birthday Party Food

Kids love food that are familiar to them, so you won’t get a headache trying to think of exotic food that will whet their appetites. As an extra precaution, it will also be a nice gesture to call up parents ahead of time and ask them if there are any allergies or food that their children can’t eat. That way you’re ensured that all the food your prepare will be enjoyed by everyone. Here are some suggestions for your baby’s birthday party food.

  • An Array of Baby Food. You read that right. Some of your friends might be bringing over their own babies who might not be ready for solid food just yet. Prepare classic baby food flavors. Pureed apple and banana, soup, soft rice, and cereals soaked in milk are sure favorites.
  • Mashed Potatoes and Gravy. Serving mashed potatoes sounds a little grown-up, but it’s still very kid-friendly due to its flavor and softness. Adults will love it, too.
  • cereal soaked in milk

    cake

    sandwich

  • Roasted Lemon Herb Chicken. Who can go wrong with chicken? Bake a chicken in a marinade made from Italian seasoning, lemon juice, salt, mustard powder, pepper and garlic for a real treat.
  • Make Your Own Sandwich. Kids will surely love putting in all the good stuff in their sandwiches. Prepare a platter of cheese, sandwich bread, crackers, baguettes and vegetables to choose from. Don’t forget to put mustard, ketchup and mayonnaise at the side, too.
  • Baby’s Birthday Cake. What’s a birthday party without a special birthday cake? You can make a cake or order one designed after the party’s theme or color motif. The cake can also come in shape of a baby item or topped with an edible printout of your baby. Don’t forget to sing a loud birthday song when you bring the cake out!
