If you’re tired of the usual costume parties, why not get inspired and stick to just one theme instead by having a fun pirate party! A pirate theme party is a fun option, but you need to fully and properly prepare to achieve the aura of a real swashbuckling pirate adventure. From the invitations up to the party favors, you need to make sure that everything is set and harmonizes with the pirate theme. Here are several useful tips that you can use for your pirate party.

All Aboard! The Pirate Invitations

Remember, the fun begins as soon as your guests receive their invitations. One fun idea is to use a “message in a bottle” concept for your party. You simply have to print out the party information on paper, then fold each one up and insert them inside clear water bottles or glass bottles. You can add a couple of tablespoons of sand for additional effect.

Another fun idea you can use is a pirate map invitation. Using brown paper, write down the party information on one side, and on the other, draw a map that actually shows the way to the party venue. Place a large X mark on the location. Then, crumple the paper so that it looks old and wrinkly.

Your Pirate Ship Quarters: The Party Decorations

Your venue needs to have a pirate ship look so that your guests will feel that they are really sailing out on the seven seas. If you have the talent, draw a large backdrop that shows a pirate ship’s deck, complete with the masts and sails. You can also cut out a large appliance box, cut it in the shape of a pirate ship and paint it brown.

For additional pirate decorations, you can place “treasure chests” around your venue. Get a couple of large Styrofoam ice containers, then spray paint them all over to make them look like treasure chests.

Dressing the Part: Pirate Costumes

You can’t be a real pirate if you don’t look like a pirate, right? To get this effect, you can simply purchase a pirate costume from costume stores. If you don’t want to spend money, you can easily whip up your own costume using a bandanna, an eye-patch, tight fitting trousers, a long sleeved shirt and high-cut boots.

Ask your guests to also come in their best pirate costumes. Indicate this on your invitations so that they’ll know the dress code immediately.

Pirate Fun: Party Activities

Pirates love having fun as much as they love treasure, so you should prepare fun activities to keep your pirate guests occupied. A treasure/scavenger hunt is a popular choice. You can also set up a “plank”—a rectangular masking tape outline on the floor—and ask your guests to walk on it while blindfolded. Whoever walks the furthest wins.

If your party gets rained on, you could rent a movie with a pirate theme, such as Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean” trilogy, “Hook,” or “Peter Pan” for the kiddies.

Dining Like a Pirate: Party Food

Pirates aren’t picky about their food, but you should serve dishes that have pirate themes. For example, fish sticks or gold chicken nuggets are good ideas. Seaweed pasta (green linguine) and golden treasures (macaroni and cheese) are also delicious choices that your guests will love. As for the drinks, remember that pirates love drinking, so you should serve them root “beer” or ginger “ale.”

For a real swashbuckling adventure, a pirate theme is the most enjoyable option that you can choose, so get ready to set sail the seven seas and have a fun party that you’ll remember for the rest of your life.
