A Unique Vegetarian Banquet: An East Indian Theme Party
Why don’t you have an ethnic party? An Indian theme would be a very good choice because it’s culturally diverse. You and your friends could have a good time with this theme. India is a country that has a beautiful history, which is why it’s only natural for it to have a very rich culture. If you want to throw a dinner party with an Indian twist, you should have some knowledge of the basic traditions and practices in this country. Otherwise, your guests won’t feel the Indian theme very well.
Indian Attire
Ask your guests to wear the proper Indian clothing to the party. For women, it’s the Sari, a long colorful cloth wrapped around the body, similar to a toga. View the video below to see different sari styles.
For men, the Kurta, a long-sleeved and button-down shirt that falls just above the knees, is okay. You will see examples of a kurta in the video below.
Indian Decorations and Atmosphere
Indians eat on low tables, just like the Japanese, except they sit on comfy cushions. Use this concept for your Indian party setting. Instead of holding the party in your dining area, use the low living room coffee table instead. Cover it with an Indian print cloth then put cushions around the table for your guests to sit on.
For decorations and for an Indian atmosphere, get some incense and scented candles and light them up for the party. If you have extra Indian print sheets, put them all over your walls, like drapes.

Indian Food Ideas
For your party food, make sure you prepare Indian dishes that use many herbs and spices. Popular examples include Roti or flat bread; Chicken Tikka Makhani or buttered chicken; Sambhar or lentil vegetable stew; and Besan Ladoo or Indian cookie balls.

To get recipes for these dishes, buy an Indian recipe book. Remember, Indian cuisine is considered by many to be the most diverse cuisine in the world. Unless you properly prepare it, the dishes would taste bland or unappetizing.
Activities for Your Indian Party
Your Indian party wouldn’t be complete without fun activities. One excellent suggestion would be to dance along to Indian music. Buy an Indian dance instructional video, and have your guests follow the steps. You could also watch an Indian movie.
An Indian theme is an enjoyable option you could consider for your party. Try it out, and experience a taste of Asia right in your very own home.
