Preparing for a Holiday Party: Invites and Decorations
Invitations to your party should be sent out a few weeks before the holiday rolls in. There will be many parties, so make sure you send the invites early so they don’t get buried under all the others. Invitations for holiday parties don’t have to be elaborate. They just have to be decorated festively with all the details of the party clearly printed out. You can also send email invitations to save you money and time.
It’s also a good idea to start buying decorations while it’s early, especially if you want banners, streamers and balloons with special decorations. If you’re having very small children in your party, look for décor they won’t be able to swallow. You should also keep in mind some of these things:
- Slip covers for your furniture. Some holidays have a specific color combination, like black and orange for Halloween. Having your furniture follow these color themes is a fun, understated addition to your decorations. Also, having a holiday party means that there will be kids around, so it’s also a great way to protect your upholstery from dirt and spills.
- Tablecloths and Napkins. Are you using the same holiday tablecloth and napkins for ten years already? Make sure they aren’t too shabby.
- Improving Decorations. If you’ve been using the same Christmas wreath for years and years, maybe it’s about time to ring up some changes. Buy new decorations to add up to your already-existing ones and you’ll be surprised at how they can freshen up the old decorations.
- Tableware. Do you have enough plates, glasses, spoons, knives and forks for your guests? Do you have tableware appropriate for very small children? Make sure that you check on your available tableware. It’ll be embarrassing if you’re caught without a plate to set for that extra guest.
- Christmas Lights. Believe it or not, Christmas lights also come in handy for other holidays, especially for any party that’s sure to extend until nighttime. Its effects are really pretty and they come fairly cheap, too.

Holiday Eating

If you’re not sure on what your family’s food preferences are, it’s better to stick to traditional and classic dishes. The same rule also apply when preparing food for the kids. The more familiar they are with the food, the bigger possibility of them eating it. Chicken, pizza, pasta, salad, cakes and popcorn are surefire and easy to prepare treats.
Prepare your holiday feast a week or a day before the party date, depending on the complexity of the dishes and the ingredients you’re using. Food that easily spoils should be made on the day itself. Cooking food can also be an excellent time for your family to bond. You can prepare meals where the kids can be involved, like frosting cupcakes or making salad. You’ll be surprised at how enthusiastic they can be at the opportunity to cook food with you.
Happy Holiday Fun

If you’re expecting kids, have a space specifically set for playing games or just plain horsing around. Your living room area should also be ready for adults who just want to sit around, watch TV and talk.
If you want to have an game that will include both adult and kids, why not play a round of charades or Pictionary? (Learn how to play pictionary) You can also play card games, stacking games and video games, making any generation gap easy to cross over.
If a holiday like the 4th of July rolls along, you can also arrange a lovely picnic with your friends and family to watch the fireworks. Don’t forget to prepare all the picnic necessities.
