Mother’s Day Party Ideas

Moms day
Mothers have been there for us through good times and bad times, cheered for us when we were feeling low, and have supported us from the day we were born. Mother’s Day is the perfect opportunity for us to come together and say thank you for all the great efforts she’s done in raising us. Here are some things you can do to make your Mother’s Day party special.

Planning the Party

Costume for party

The party is all about your mom, so make sure that you invite her friends, relatives and even co-workers to this event. Mother’s Day parties can even turn out to be something like a reunion. It will surely please your mother to see all those dear faces on one happy day!

You can also make the party a surprise—but secrecy is the key! Make sure you inform everyone in your family of your plans. (Learn how to plan a surprise party)

Your Mother’s Day party can also have a theme—it can be the era from when she was born, a favorite TV show, or if she was born in another country, you can also do a country theme as well. Ask your guests to come in costume, and make sure that you have something stored away for your mother so she blends in with the theme as well!

Decorating for Mom

Your Mother’s Day party can be held at any time of the day, but the best time to hold it is brunch—between breakfast and lunch, and held outdoors, since it’s most likely that your guests will also bring their children, and children need a place to run around.

Decorate the party to make it colorful but classy—it’s not a kid’s party! The best way to do this is to use your mom’s favorite color in a more subdued tone, paired with white or cream. Use a cream tablecloth to use on your tables with your mom’s favorite color as a runner. Put up banners declaring your love for your mom and greeting her a happy Mother’s Day. You can also blow up a picture of her and set it up where it is clearly visible to all of your guests. Create a montage of your mom through the years and have it continuously play on a projected screen—or you can do this to cap off the party as a surprise.

Keep in mind all of your mom’s interests and hobbies, and integrate them with the decorating. For example, if your mom is a big gardener, you can arrange to have her favorite flowers as table centerpieces. Other design choices also depend on whether you are following a theme for your Mother’s Day party. For example, if your mom was born in the 60’s, your design should all be strictly retro.

Make a CD of your mom’s favorite songs and play it at the party. Mix it in with other party tunes as well.

Great Mother’s Day Activities

Mother’s Day is a great way for older and younger generations to get together and get know each other more.

  • Plan a skit. Get all the kids in your family to re-enact some of your family’s most famous family stories, like how your mom met your dad, or how your grandparents immigrated to this country. Make sure to make your skits light and humorous, and it’ll sure be a huge hit.
  • Sack race. Always a popular game for school fairs. Pair up one adult and one child (or one mom and one of her kids) and off you go!
  • Who Knows Mom Best? Line up all your guests on one side of the room, your mom on the other. Ask questions pertaining to your mom, like her favorite band, favorite food, etc. Each one who answers correctly takes a step forward. The first one who reaches mom first wins.

  • Purse treasure hunting. Group moms and kids together and participate in a treasure hunting game. Teams will be asked to bring certain items that may be found in purses. It can start off easy by asking for car keys, and can become progressively more difficult, such as asking for your grandfather’s picture when he was in World War II. The team who gets more items than others wins.
  • Draw Mommy. Provide crayons, paper and other art material for the younger kids to draw their mother. You can opt to give prizes for the best drawing, but surely each picture will be treasured by each mother forever.
  • Write a letter. Make it a group effort in your family and write individual letters to your mom, from your dad to your kid brother. Make her know that you all love her very much and thank her for all the things she has done for the family. You can give it to her after the party.

Cooking for Mom

A lot of moms have been doing the cooking for their families over the years, and now it’s time to return the favor. Prepare a menu of your mom’s favorite dishes, and you can add some easy-to-make dishes to include in the menu for that personal touch. Here are some delicious suggestions:

  • Barbecue. Ask your dad to take charge of the barbecue grill. Adults and kids alike love a good barbecue, and now is a good time to turn up the heat! (Tips on how to plan a summer barbecue)
  • Salad. Very easy to make. For a nice garden salad, toss in some lettuce, carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers, croûtons, bacon chips, olives and add a little salad dressing! For fruit salad, all you have to do is to slice any kind of fruit and mix!
  • Macaroni and cheese. Think of it as a little in-joke between you and mom. Macaroni and cheese has always been your comfort food since you were a kid, so why not include it as part of your culinary hall of fame?

  • Vegetable sticks and dips. Another absurdly easy dish to prepare. Slice carrots, celery and cucumbers into fingers and arrange them around an array of dips.
  • Sandwiches. Have an array of sandwiches—tuna, chicken, beef—you name it. They’re also easy to make. Plus, the kids will love them.
  • Cake and other pastries. You don’t have to be a culinary wizard to make a cake. Just take any simple easy bake cake, but give it a kick by putting lots of ice cream and fruit on top after you’ve baked it. Your mom will surely appreciate your efforts to liven it up.

Bunch of flowers
After the party, make sure to give out small giveaways such as boxes of cake or cupcakes and a small bunch of flowers. The party may just be for your mom, but don’t forget to give other mothers a “Happy Mother’s Day!” as well.

Everyone should appreciate their mothers all throughout the years, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try making Mother’s Day a little bit more special. You can have a party for any reason, but what other better reason than to show your mom all your love and devotion to her? It’ll go a long way. Have fun and enjoy your Mothers Day party!

Surprising your dear mom with a fantastic party is a wonderful treat. The only thing you need now is a memorable gift to go with the celebration. Make her feel extra-special with these Mother’s Day gifts ideas.
