Is your child going back to school in a few days? Why not give him a back-to-school party to boost his spirits for the coming school year? A back-to-school party is a great idea because it prepares your child for the challenges and adventures he’ll face in school. All his friends can join in the party and make it a very memorable experience.

Back-to-School Party Invitations

Everything in the party should remind guests of the fun things students do in school, starting with the party invitations. Here are some suggestions for back-to-school party invitations that will really excite your guests.

Report card invitation: Some students dread report cards because of low grades or negative remarks that may be written there. Kids will surely love a report card invitation though, because it is the exact opposite of a bad report card. It should be fun with a big “A+” and a note that says, “You’re an excellent friend! Come to my back-to-school party!”

Homework invitation: You can encourage more of your child’s friends to come to the party by sending out homework invitations. The invitation should be written in a simple piece of paper or a notebook. You can invite people by saying, “Your first homework for the coming school year is to have a great time with me in my back-to school party.”

The invitation should look like it was created hastily, like a teacher just scribbled it on a piece of paper. You may use fonts in your computer that look like scribbles to write this invitation. Number reminders so that it will look like a real homework; for example:

Homework:

  1. Your first homework for the coming school year is to have a great time with me in my back-to-school party.
  2. Get ready for fun games that will test your readiness for school.
  3. Bring your mom or dad to my party so they’ll have a great time too

Notebook invitation: Another great idea is to use inexpensive notebooks as your party invitations. Put the invitation details on the cover then give it to your kid’s friends. You can make the details removable so the guest can use the notebook for school or to write something else.

Back-to-school Decorations

The decorations you will put up are very important because they will set the mood of the party. The best way to stick to the back-to-school theme is to make the venue look like a classroom. Here are some tips to get the look you want:

  • Hang a blackboard on the wall. Use a chalk to write messages on it like, “Welcome to my back-to-school party!” and “Don’t leave your seats until the games are over and the food is gone!”
  • Arrange desks or chairs just like you would in a classroom. You may provide crayons and sheets of paper on each desk so the children can write or draw while the party is going on.
  • Put up posters of the human body, numbers, or alphabets around the room. The type of posters to display depends on the age of the guests.
  • Hang maps on the wall or place globes on desks to really mimic a classroom.
  • Decorate the room with balloons and streamers to make the mood festive. Also add large paper cutouts of school buses, apples, letters and numbers to the decorations.

Games and Activities for Your Party

Games and activities for a back-to-school party should be fun and educational at the same time. These games should remind children of the joy of being in school and also warm up their minds for the school year ahead. Here are some games and activities you can do at your party:

Painting

Painting: Like clay modeling, painting is an excellent activity for a back-to-school party. Simply provide the children with sheets of paper and paint and let them go wild. Using paintbrushes is optional since the kids can use their fingers and hands to paint what they want. Make sure that parents are supervising their children so that no one takes the paint into their mouth.

Charades: Teachers usually ask students to write essays on what they did during their summer vacations. You can make your child think of what to write this early by playing a game of charades with this theme. (Learn how to play charades)

Scavenger hunt: Children love searching for things, so playing a game of scavenger hunt is an excellent idea. The treasures to find should include school supplies that are hidden in the room. If you’re going to give away pencils and pens though, make sure that they are wrapped properly to avoid any injury. You may also scatter books, erasers, and sharpeners for the children to find.

Dodge ball

Dodge ball: Your activities should not only include brain games but also physical ones. Dodge ball is a common school game that you can play in your party. Buy a very soft ball and let the kids run around the room. Move all the chairs and the desks to the sides first if you’re going to play this game.

Make your own pencil holder: Many children absolutely love doing art. You can keep them interested in the party by asking them to create their own pencil holders. Give them materials such as construction paper, crayons, paints, and stickers, so they can express themselves fully.

Alphabet game: This game is perfect for this party because it’s fast-paced and requires participants to think. The first player chooses a category, such as famous people, geography, places, or animals. He then thinks of a word from that category, for instance, BEAR. The second player must think of a word in the same category that starts with the last letter of the previous word, for example, RABBIT. The next player can say TURTLE, and so on. The player who can’t think of a word leaves the game and the player that remains gets a prize.

Clay modelling

Clay modeling: Clay modeling is a fun activity that really brings out the artistic side of children. Provide the children with modeling clay and then tell them to make things out of it. You may give them a theme, for example, animals or faces. It’s best not to make this a competitive game where the winner is the only one who gets a prize. Give all participants prizes so they’ll be more inspired to create new things. (Tips on how to make a modeling clay recipes)

Foods for Your Back-to-School Party

The food you should serve to kids should include typical lunch box treats. Serve them on plates or real lunch boxes, although buy cheap ones if you’re going to serve more than 10 children at the party. Kids will surely have fun eating the following foods:

  • Peanut butter and jelly sandwich
  • Chocolate chip cookies
  • Pudding and applesauce cups
  • Grapes, apples and baby carrots
  • Juice box

Back-to-School Party Favors

End the party by giving away party favors or loot bags of school supplies. You don’t have to give away big items like bags, but only small items that the children can use in school. The following items can easily fit into a loot bag:

Pencil

Notebooks

Crayons

  • Notebooks and folders

By celebrating the start of the school year with a fun back-to-school party, your child and his friends will be more excited for school. Their minds will also get warmed up and they’ll be ready to face new challenges in the classroom.
