Children’s Halloween Costume Safety

By Angelo

Halloween is suppose to be a fun holiday for everyone, especially for kids. As a parent, you feel extremely proud when your little tot proudly goes trick-or-treating in his or her adorable Halloween costume. Yes, wearing costumes is certainly the fun part of any kid’s Halloween celebration, but how sure are you that your child is safe while wearing his or her outfit?

You might not be aware of it, but some Halloween party costumes can be hazardous. For example, some manufacturers sell outfits made from materials that easily ignite. With the number of candles lit during this season, it’s not impossible for your child’s attire to catch fire. To avoid this, you should get costumes that are made from nylon or polyester and are labeled Flame-Resistant. Although it doesn’t mean they won’t catch fire, these items are able to resist burning, and once they ignite, the flames die down quickly.

Even homemade Halloween party costumes can be dangerous. Here are a few tips you should keep in mind.

  • Opt for face paint instead of mask, since they can obstruct the kid’s vision.
  • Snug-fitting and short outfit sare better than baggy ones, since they allow the child to move more freely, and help prevent tripping and falling.
  • Costume accessories, such as knives and swords, should be blunt and made from flexible and soft materials.

Keep you kid away from harm during Halloween parties by making sure the costume he or she is wearing is safe. By doing so, you can feel at ease, knowing your child is enjoying the spooky and exciting season.

Hello, thanks for such an informative and helpful article. My kids always look forward to Halloween because they can dress up as anyone they want.

My son is dressing up as a pirate this Halloween. He told me he wants to wear an eyepatch. Is an eyepatch safe for him? This is a real eyepatch that blocks your vision, not the one that has a hole.
