Toga Costume Accessories

College students love to party, and when it comes to these get-togethers, theme parties are the best, like a toga party for example. Ever since the 1980’s, this costume party has been a fun “ritual” among many student organizations. It’s like going back to the ancient Roman and Greek times while having modern entertainment.

As tradition goes, you don your homemade toga for the party, but as you stare at yourself at the mirror, you feel…bland. As if there’s a lot missing. Then you realize, you don’t have any accessories yet!

Toga accessories are what makes the costume more enticing and attractive or comical (for guys, since they love to look kooky during these gatherings). It just takes a bit of creativity and imagination.

Must-have toga accessories include:

  • Roman sandals – Think about the sandals worn by men and women in the movie Gladiator. They’re flat, with straps that goes up to the ankles or the calves. They’re usually made of leather.
  • Crown of thorns or crown of laurel leaves - These headpieces have always been worn during ancient times, and so they’re very appropriate for your getup. Besides, they’ll enhance any type of hairdo you wear.
  • Jewelry – Old-fashioned gold chains, amulets and bracelets for the ladies will add an alluring look to the costume.
  • Swords – No, don’t get sharp real ones, or you might end up slicing someone’s head at the party. Just find fake plastic ones at toys stores. Guys love these accessories, because they can use it to whack each other on the head—and nobody bleeds.

You can easily buy these accessories at costume shops, but if you have a limited budget for your getup, then you can improvise. Use items you’ll find around the house. You’ll be surprised how useful they can be.

For example, you can use a coat hanger or wire for the crown of laurel leaves. Shape it according to your head’s size, then wrap some real or fake leaves around it. Voila! A homemade headpiece.

For the swords, use some cardboard and aluminum foil. Cut the board in the shape of a sword, then wrap the foil around it.

Make your toga party unforgettable with a great toga costume, complete with accessories. Once you’re all dressed up, prepare to party!
